Move over, Michelangelo. There’s a new AI kid in town.

Yes, the title is cheeky. Please don’t hate me. I am not at all saying that AI can replace the incredible works of some of the world’s greatest artists and thinkers. But, it is awe-fearing (awe-spiring and slightly fearsome) to see the incredible work I (or AI) can generate at the stroke of several keyboards.

Stability.Ai is the “world’s leading open source generative AI company.” On its About page, its mission is “to maximize the accessibility of modern AI to inspire global creativity and innovation.”

One of its products is DreamStudio, where you can “explore the realms of your imagination with generate mode. Achieve your goals with exclusive StableDiffusion models, text-to-image, image-to-image, variations, and styles.”

Explore the realms of my imagination with generate mode? How can I resist? I signed up for access. Once you are on the platform, you can have a prompt, a negative prompt, and a drop-down menu of style choices ranging from enhancing to pixel art or line art to isometric.

Below, you can see several of AI’s renditions of some of Michaelanglo’s most famous work. The image on the left is a screenshot of the original, and the image on the right is the AI rendition.

Incredible, isn’t it? Curious, I wanted to test AI on one of the most famous paintings in history — the mysterious Mona Lisa. I typed in Mona Lisa and chose different styles. Below are the fascinating results.

Here is the original Mona Lisa.

And below are the AI-generated Mona Lisa in various art styles.

Incredible, isn’t it? These art pieces were generated in a matter of seconds. I’m no artist by any means — in fact — I know very little about art besides what I like and don’t like. From a side-by-side comparison, AI doesn’t hold a flame to the incredible emotions the masterpieces invoke in us.

But — it is a good imitation. It’s a clear imitation of the original. And AI is only going to get better, clearer, and more realistic. And AI can build on the masterpiece to create something similar but different.

The future of art is definitely in for some metamorphic transformations.
